OUR PROJECT: BUILDING A DISABILITY DATA BANK

BRISIN International Foundation will assist to raise funds for building a disability data bank with the capacity to collate and store the information of all categories of disabled persons in Nigeria and the project is to profile all disabled persons, to help them access social welfare appropriately.

This data bank will solve 80% of the nuisance they create because it will make their voices to be heard structurally and the things meant for them will be channeled appropriately.

REASONS FOR THE DATA BANK

  • Data is the key ingredient for evidence-based policy making. Currently, we guess and rely on foreign organizations to give us figures about our disabled persons.
  • We have some baseline surveys that are not realistic, thus, rendering life difficult not only for people living with disability but also for people in governance.
  • To combat poverty and social exclusion. The two-way link between poverty and disability creates a vicious circle. Poor people are more at risk of acquiring a disability because of lack of access to good nutrition, health care, sanitation, as well as safe living and working conditions. Once this occurs, people face barriers to education, employment, and public services that can help them escape poverty.
  • To achieve social inclusion and equal opportunities Barriers to full social and economic inclusion of persons with disabilities include inaccessible physical environments and transportation, the unavailability of assistive devices and technologies, non-adapted means of communication, gaps in service delivery, and discriminatory prejudice and stigma in society. Disability may increase the risk of poverty, through lack of employment and education opportunities, lower wages, and increased cost of living.

BENEFITS OF THE DATA BANK

The disability data bank is beneficial because it will help not only knowing the numbers of persons living with disabilities but to know the root cause of such condition and provide precautionary major to avoid future occurrence.

Most disabled persons are super talented and as such the disability data bank will help create a viable platform to harness such potential as workshops and seminars will be intermittently organized to help them develop their skills. This data bank for Disabled Persons is targeted at tapping into all aspects of the nation’s economy and bringing about developmental and economic growth in the country.
